Privacy policy

Your location

The calendar and the zmanim box only need a location when you ask for the times of a place. When you pick a city, type a zip code or coordinates, or tap "use my current location", the coordinates are sent to our server, which works out the zmanim, the candle-lighting and end-of-Shabbos times, and the clock of that place. For the clock, our server sends the coordinates, and nothing else, to Google’s time zone service.

The place you chose is kept on your own phone or computer so you do not have to enter it again: in the app always, on the website only while "Remember my settings" is on. On our server it appears in the request log described below. You can always use a city name instead of your exact position, and you can deny the app the location permission.

Yahrzeit reminders

If you ask for a yearly reminder of a yahrzeit, we keep your email address and the yahrzeit you chose. For a personal yahrzeit we also keep the name and the date of passing you entered, so the reminder and your calendar feed can carry them. This is used for nothing but the reminder emails and the feed. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to remove everything.

If you suggest a missing or corrected yahrzeit, the details you entered are kept until they are reviewed, together with your email address if you gave one.

Writing to us

Emails you send us stay in our mailbox with your address and what you wrote, and are used only to answer you.

Zmanim by text

Texts sent to the zmanim line arrive through Twilio, the messaging service that carries them. We keep a log of each message with the phone number, the text and the time, in order to reply and to keep to the fair-use limit of the line. We never send a message you did not ask for, and the numbers are not used for anything else.

Server logs

Like every website, our server records each request: the address (IP) it came from, the page or data requested, the page that linked to it, the type of browser or app, and the time. For zmanim requests the coordinates are part of the request and are recorded with it. These logs serve statistics, security and fixing problems; we do not use them to identify anyone.

Settings on your phone or computer

Your language, calendar type, view, zmanim options and chosen place are stored only in your browser or in the app on your phone. On the website this happens only while "Remember my settings" is on; switch it off and the stored settings are removed. The website also uses a technical cookie to keep your session while the pages load data.

Other services involved

• Google Analytics on the website counts visits: which pages are viewed, roughly from where, and with what kind of device. Google places its own cookies for this. The app has no analytics at all.
• The city search box on the website and the Google Fonts used for its text are loaded from Google, so your browser connects to Google and Google sees your address. The app uses the address lookup built into Android to find a city, not Google Maps.
• Google’s time zone service receives the coordinates of a place, as described above.
• Twilio carries the text messages of the zmanim line.
• When another website shows one of our date-pickers, that page loads calendar data from our server, and the request is logged as described above. We learn nothing about who you are from it.

What we do not do

• We do not sell, rent or pass on your data to anyone.
• We show no advertising and use no advertising networks.
• There are no user accounts and no profiles.
• The app does not read your contacts, photos or files, and does not collect device identifiers.

Your choices

• Use a city name instead of your exact position, or deny the location permission.
• Leave "Remember my settings" off, or switch it off to remove what was stored.
• Unsubscribe from reminders with the link in any reminder email.
• Write to us to have anything we keep about you removed.

Security

Everything travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and the data is kept on our own server.

Children

The website and the app are meant for a general audience and are not aimed at children under 13; we do not knowingly keep anything about them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version appears on this page with a new date.
